For most hobbyists, a 6-inch wet trim saw is the best first rock cutting saw. It is large enough for common uncut rocks, often called field rough, and small enough for a garage bench. A bigger machine is useful only when your stones are too large for that blade.

Lapidary means cutting, shaping, and polishing stone. This guide covers the cutting step. If you only want rounded, polished pebbles, a rock tumbler is the simpler machine.

Two more useful words: rough is an uncut rock, and a preform is a small piece given a basic shape before final sanding and polishing. A rounded, polished gem with a flat back is called a cabochon.

Trim Saw vs Slab Saw vs Band Saw

  • Trim saw: makes short, controlled cuts. Use it to remove a bad edge, shape a cabochon blank, or expose the inside of a small specimen. A cabochon blank is the small piece that will become a rounded, polished gem.
  • Slab saw: cuts a large rock into flat slices called slabs. It uses a larger blade and needs more coolant and cleanup.
  • Diamond band saw: turns corners. Use it for curves and free-form outlines, not for pushing through a thick slab.
  • Wet tile saw: can make rough straight cuts, but it is not built around small specimens or precise lapidary work.

The maker calls the exact linked package product code (SKU) 91010. It includes the diamond blade. A narrow band blade can turn through a curve, so this saw suits free-form shapes and outlines a round blade cannot follow.

Inland Craft also gives the limit clearly: the DB-100 is not intended for thick slabs. Use a trim or slab saw for the straight heavy cut, then use the band saw when the outline itself needs to turn.

How to Choose Blade Size

A blade does not cut all the way up to its center. The useful cutting depth is much less than half the blade diameter. Check the maker's stated capacity, then leave room to hold the stone safely.

  • 4/5 inch: small preforms and thin pieces.
  • 6 inch: the broadest fit for first hobby work.
  • 10 inch: larger rough and slab work.

Do not size the machine around the biggest rock you found once. Size it around what you will cut most weeks.

Water, Coolant, and Dust

Rock dust can contain crystalline silica. Breathing that fine dust can damage lungs. Wet cutting helps control airborne dust and cools the blade, but it does not replace the saw's guard or safe handling.

Follow the manual for the exact machine and blade. Small trim saws may call for water with an approved additive. Some larger slab systems use a special cutting oil. Never guess, and never pour household chemicals into a machine because a forum called them “close enough.”

Safe Wet Cutting
