Editorial Policy
How we research, write, and maintain the content on this site. Our commitment to accuracy, transparency, and doing right by the collecting community.
Our editorial standard
Every piece of content published on The Rockhounding Hub is held to a standard we take seriously. This isn't a content farm. We don't outsource writing to people who've never held a rock hammer, and we don't publish articles reverse-engineered from search queries. Our content exists because collectors need it, and we write it because we're collectors ourselves.
How we research content
Location guides
Our location guides are based on firsthand visits to the sites we write about. Where we haven't personally visited a location, we note that clearly and base the guide on documented reports from other experienced collectors, cross-referenced with public records (BLM data, USGS publications, state geological survey materials).
Every location guide includes GPS coordinates that we verify against satellite imagery, access type (public land, fee-dig, private), current regulations, and a last-updated date. We contact land management agencies to confirm access rules when our information is more than one year old.
Mineral data
Mineral properties (hardness, crystal system, formula, streak, cleavage) are verified against authoritative references including:
- Mindat.org— the world's largest open mineral database
- USGS publications and mineral commodity summaries
- Established mineralogy textbooksincluding Klein & Dutrow's Manual of Mineral Science and Nassau's The Physics and Chemistry of Color
Where data sources disagree (as they sometimes do for properties like hardness ranges), we note the range rather than picking a single value.
Tool and gear reviews
Our gear reviews are based on hands-on testing in real field conditions. We purchase or borrow the equipment, use it over multiple collecting trips, and write about what we observe. We do not write reviews based on product specifications, manufacturer claims, or other reviews.
How we handle accuracy
We make mistakes. When we do, we fix them. Our approach to accuracy:
- Corrections are welcomed. If a reader spots an error — wrong coordinates, incorrect mineral data, outdated access rules — we want to know. Reach out through our contact page.
- We don't silently edit. Significant corrections are noted on the article. Minor typo fixes are not.
- Every article has a date. Published and last-updated dates appear on all content so readers know how current the information is.
- We don't guess. If we don't know something with confidence, we say so rather than filling space with hedged language.
Updates and reviews
Content on this site is reviewed and updated on a rolling basis. Our priorities for updates:
- Access rule changes — When land status, fees, or permit requirements change, we update guides as soon as we become aware.
- Safety information — Safety-related content is reviewed at least annually.
- Gear availability — Product reviews are updated when models are discontinued or significantly revised.
- Reader feedback — When a reader reports that conditions at a site have changed, we verify and update accordingly.
Safety and legal disclaimers
Rockhounding involves physical activity in natural environments. Our safety guidance is based on experience and common sense, but it is not a substitute for professional instruction. Readers are responsible for their own safety decisions.
Our legal information (collecting rules, land access, permit requirements) is researched carefully but should not be treated as legal advice. Regulations vary by jurisdiction and change over time. When in doubt, contact the relevant land management agency directly.
Affiliate links and monetization
The Rockhounding Hub may earn revenue through affiliate links and advertising. Here is how we handle this:
- Reviews are written first. We form our opinions through hands-on testing before any affiliate relationship is established. Revenue does not influence our recommendations.
- Affiliate links are disclosed. When a link in our content earns us a commission if you make a purchase, we disclose this clearly on the page.
- We recommend what we use.We will never recommend a product we haven't personally tested or wouldn't use ourselves.
- Advertising does not influence content. Advertising on this site (such as display ads) is served by third-party networks and does not affect our editorial decisions.
